It’s 6am in the morning and I’m at work. This, of course, means I’m desperately trying to remember basic things like my name and if I put on deodorant today. This is the wanton stress your brain undergoes when you wake up before the sun. It is a bad, unnatural thing that our ancestors would never have subscribed to. Unfortunately, I like eating food and buying the occasional DVD so this is the trade-off. No sleep x Paperwork = Money.

What I need now is a big ole fuzzy coma of Van Winkle proportions. Just a day where I abuse Nyquil or some other over-the-counter snooze-inducer and only leave my bed to empty the bedpan. That, good people, is the size and shape of the heaven I want to live in. But for now this means, when I leave work I’m running home and hiding under the covers for the next thousand years or so.

Aside from a pathetic need for adequate sleep, life has been pretty good recently. This past Sunday saw us hosting a shit ton of our favorite people on this planet. Everyone came to our place to watch old cartoons and eat cereal in our pjs. Of course, we’re all sophisticated scumbags so this also means drinking an alarming amount of Pabst cocktails and mimosas made from Andre, which is the McDonalds of cheap champagne (Three Stacks, what what!) It was of course too much fun and I’ll be sure to post my pictures in the next day or so.

Okay I’m off to swallow another seven hours of labor and then drift into blissful unconsciousness.

The head’s getting formally fitted for July. Surprisingly I have very little that I’m looking forward to for the rest of the summer. That isn’t nearly as sad as pathetic as it sounds. It’s just that June was my birthday party and my CA vacay and Gay Pride and now it’s July and I find myself empty-handed asking what’s next. This, of course, is a very good place to be.

Now it’s a simple application of some refined creative juices and I’ll use this new found scheduling freedom to create, clean, ponder, plan and all around continue to step “it” up. Been writing more, drawing more, blogging more, taking pics, working out, not drinking as much (Pride weekend doesn’t count) and just staying on track as much as possible. Now it’s just a matter of adhering to that format and building upon it. Growing up grand.

So I should start this by saying that I did not grow up on Michael Jackson’s music like so many of you. My mom was much more comforted by equal parts silence and television. My life, which is now immersed in audio pleasure on so many different levels, was not graced much by music until my mid-teens. I say all this to point out that Michael Jackson in no way affected me to the same degree he did for some of you.

At the same time, as any self-respecting child of the 80’s, I have a couple of choice MJ memories. I clearly remember thinking how cool it was that he made ‘bad’ mean ‘good’ or that he filmed the “Beat It” video in a train station close to home (Hoyt & Schmerhorn – what what!) and I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the Moonwalker video that Cameron and I must’ve seen a dozen times, but that’s it. It’s not hitting me particularly hard. I’m not sad or shaken or any of those choice emoticons found under the grief heading. *Come see me when Talib Kweli or Aesop Rock dies and I’m sure it’ll be a different story.

I will say that the anthropologist in me is very curious to see what our world of consumer culture will be like in the coming weeks. Mark my words, this’ll prove to be very interesting times. I can just picture all manner of folks coming out the woodwork to either rape his memory or deify him on a level unseen since the Princess lost a drag race to the paparazzi. And of course, every hipster will rock an ironic shirt, one lone glove or a bastardized version of his leather jackets. Exciting times indeed, children.

With that said, in no way did he die in his prime. He’d been reduced to an occasional joke on late night monologues and nothing more. To most of us he’d been dead for years whether we’d like to admit it or not, which is fine. Like any normal child, we outgrow even our favorite toy after awhile. It’s what we do. He fell victim to little more than time and an ever shortening attention span. No one’s immune to that.

So today, we remember the king of pop. And what a fitting figure head he was. A poster-child for plastic surgery, black shame, familial abuse, and indulging every whim you have as long as you can foot the bill. A former child star maladjusted to the world around him. We couldn’t have picked a better tribute to what’s popular in America if we tried.

And as good little sycophants for anything entertaining we let his eccentricities run rampant instead of getting the man the psychiatric help he desperately needed. His best friend growing up was a rat for Gods’ sake. He underwent numerous plastic surgeries to take him as far from black as humanly possible. His children bear no resemblance to him at all, not so much as the oh-so-prevalent ‘Jackson nose.’ These were warning signs that he was not right and we collectively ignored it because he charmed us with the hands-down best minstrel act in the last half of the 20th century. And then when we couldn’t use him any longer we threw him away. We stopped believing in him and that desperate, frightened brain-damaged man-child died of a broken heart, never to walk the moon again.

The king is dead. Long live the king. May he finally find Neverland.

Been back from Cali for a few days now. Still getting my head on straight and readjusting to the ill-fitting New York City suit I find myself in. The yearning to get out of here sooner than later has only gotten stronger in the last four years. It's time I start listening to it.

Besides that, I had an awesome time on vacation. It was great seeing one of my ace boons: Mushroom Mama Molly Mexico and the post-NY life she's settled into.

Plus we saw amazing graffiti, were graced with authentic bits of actual nature, met some really nice quirky characters, played with two of the cutest dogs on God's green and ingested copious amounts of top-notch Mexican food. I loved every minute of it. I also spent the entire week out of my head on special brownies which only enhanced my time there.

San Francisco is were I need to be for awhile. So now I have to just start materializing my desire. No big deal, right?

It was also great spending so much QT with my baby, Brandonia. It was nice to see that after seven days straight with little to no break from each other we never fought or argued or got on each others nerves. A grand sign of compatibility in my eyes.

I also got some great shots while I was there, which is another plus. Now that I'm back it's time to start getting it together and start art-hustling. Plus I'm a year older and that carries it's own set of demands and pressures as well.

But all in all, I'm doing well. Just trying to get my head in the game. Or to paraphrase the rapper, Big Sean: "Money's like fucking, if you grind hard enough that shit'll keep coming"

It's definitely Juneteenth Grind Time '09.

Right. It’s a rainy Thursday and I’ve had just enough sleep to amount to sweet fuck all.

My brain, notoriously under-hydrated with alcoholic beverages of late, is also suffering from sleep deprivation of the highest order. My good good brain meat has spoiled. It’s gone bad from the lack of 40 winks. It’s refusing to hold on to thoughts or be cognitive in the least bit and all I want to gobble a bottle’s worth of Ambien, wash it down with some Nyquil and hide under my comforter for a few weeks. Ah, too be young again.

Besides that, I’ve been noticeably more creative recently. Drawing, writing and taking pictures and such. This makes my heart happy.

Brandon, the big perv, has started a blog as an outlet for all of the lustful thoughts that haunt him nightly. I suggested brain trepidation but he wasn’t so keen on poking holes in his skull to ventilate the oversexed parts of his head. He’s no fun.

Also, in honor of both Shawn and me climbing out of our mommies vah-jeens a week apart, we’re having a birthday party this Saturday. I’m looking forward to drinking games, seeing peeps I haven’t hung out with in awhile and dancing our collective asses to the platinum party mix I compiled last weekend. Izz gon b fun.

Then it’s off to Cali for my birthday vaction on the left coast with my boy. We’re gonna visit Molly in Capitola for a few days then ride down to San Fran for the remainder of the trip. I cannot wait. There are a million things I need to do before, of course, but I’m still psyched to get away. Especially with my baby to the place that I plan on moving to someday soon.

I think that’s it. I’ve exhausted my brain’s remaining batteries to write this. I’m off to simper quiet in the corner as speckles of drool leak their way out the side of my mouth.

A New Short Story I've Just Written...

It was a Monday

It was a Monday. Fitting. These days every day felt like a Monday. Shuffling through the same bleak, overcast day over and over. Cloudy with a chance of blah. Gruelish in that forever kind of way. From now until he died of something boring and ordinary like starvation or bed sores. At this point it didn't matter either way.

One more Monday under his belt and then a dull bus ride until he’s home. Then it’s shoveling down lukewarm whatever with a fork while giving a glassy-eyed disregard to whatever the television called “reality.” Then masturbating halfheartedly to internet porn until he fell asleep. Then awake for another round. Wash and repeat.

He remembers when he had a girlfriend. Her name was Amanda something and he loved her. Sort of.

Amanda; nothing exotic about the name but it did imply a certain youthful beauty. He'd yet to meet an unattractive 'Amanda' and she did little to hurt the average. She was curvy, clever and pretty. They were mismatched in that way that only lummoxes and jerks ever seemed to benefit from. And aside from that, or maybe because of it, she was always spontaneous, never pretentious and genuinely excited about all of life’s odysseys that lay in front of her. She often spoke of vacation trips to Mumbai, protecting women’s rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or spending her golden years drinking port in some small café in Normandy. She was worldly in a way that never felt exclusive.

She'd buy him exotic gifts from all the places she'd wanted to take him someday. A moss tile jute rug from Istanbul for Christmas or a terracotta vase only made in Beijing to celebrate their anniversary. She'd always go the extra mile to get him something different and enticing.

In bed she was voracious. Experienced way beyond her 22 years and all too eager to please. As lascivious as a room of full of pubescent teens who've just seen their first nudie mag and always up to try out any half-baked fantasy he could come up with. In their time together, they'd done it wearing blindfolds, wearing handcuffs, in the bum, outside on park benches and even with another girl on one very special Valentine's Day.

She had the kind of adventurous spirit that could polarize any dinner party. Half of the room fell in love with her vernal eagerness; remembering their own dreams of traveling the globe or conquering the world. The other half hated the naïve little bitch for what she represented to them; opportunities lost, growing older, giving up hope in exchange for security. He never paid much mind to the latter half.

When you’re six years her senior, out of shape and settled into a life of one quietly, soul crushing indignity after another, someone like Amanda comes across like a gift from the gods. Think: winning lottery ticket or a free cruise to a place where the sun’s always out and the brown people smile a lot and serve the kind of drinks that have cheeky names and come prepared for rain. She was that rare. That uncommon and extraordinary. He had no choice but to fall in love.

But like most good things, even love comes with an expiration date. And nothing makes love go sour faster than languor and comfort. It's arachnid in how it spreads, in every direction at once like so much venom. Clawing away at long-term happiness revealing the apathy underneath with poisonous questions like: "why try so hard to be romantic, we've already got her?" He was bitten by the indifference bug; to life, sex, career or all of the above. And slowly it was becoming all of the above.

He remembers the day she left. It was a Monday. Fitting. Sunny and warm with just the right amount of breeze to keep the sweat off. The kind of day that’s perfect if you’re leaving your increasingly flat and indifferent prick of a boyfriend and starting a new life. Of course, if you were the guy who just got dumped then it probably would have felt more like the weather itself just played one those infectious, Japanese arcade games where the title has ‘dance’ in it twice, on your balls then kicked your teeth in to drive the point home. Or it should have. He found that he barely cared. He didn't even turn his head from the TV when he said "bye."

That was the day he gave up trying. Impassiveness dropped anchor and the notion of concern for anything was swiftly losing ground. She represented the last little dollop of drive and ambition he had. The woman he'd loved for the last half-decade was leaving him, and by that point, he couldn't muster up anything close to regard.

It started on his birthday earlier that year. He turned 32 in his favorite Mexican restaurant. Just him and her and a few of his friends from the office. It was a Monday. Fitting. He had his favorite dish, the chicken mole burrito. A mariachi band sang "Feliz Cumpleanos" to him while he blew out the candles on his tres leches milk cake.

Of course, she'd gotten him the best gift of all. Yet another doodad from some far-off place she had hopes of dragging him to. This one was a bawaajige nagwaagan for the First Nation. A willow hoop decorated with ornaments and beads with an intricately patterned net woven across it. He remembers thinking it kind of looked like God's eye as he half-paid attention to her explain what it was. Something about prosperity yadda yadda ensnaring aspirations blah blah blah keeping success etc. He was too entranced with his new present to listen fully.

That night, after a bout of marathon birthday sex, he slept with a head full of webs and the distinct click-clacking of eight separate legs moving in unison across his dreams.

The next morning he decided not to shave. Who cares, right? No one would notice. Three days later he stopped using soap when he washed. Who's got the time in the morning? A week later he stopped showering altogether. No big deal. Before long he only had clean clothes if she washed them for him. He would only have clean bowls and spoons if Amanda did his dishes.

They stopped having sex soon after. He honestly didn't care to. He was lethargic, listless and limp. And his recent lack in basic hygiene didn't make matters any better.

And it wasn't just the big obvious changes either. He hadn't bothered to follow-up with his boss about his annual raise (The one that was already three months overdue.) He no longer argued with his landlord to come fix the radiator (it worked in the summer but refused to come to life when it was cold out.) He stopped planning the vacation to Bali that he was going to surprise her with. He didn't even attempt faking being sociable when coworkers invited him out for drinks. One by one his concerns and cares came away in flakes like so much dead skin.

Not long after Amanda left, he started going to work late. Then he started leaving early. Eventually, he stopped showing up at all. He just couldn't be bothered. He began eating whatever canned food he had at home and when that ran out he stopped eating altogether. Two days later he gave up the notion of even getting out of bed at all.

He died, of course. A blank faced corpse. Ennui as the murder weapon. Death by complacency. Bored stiff.

And somewhere in his beige apartment, to the right of the authentic Bavarian coo-coo clock he got two years ago, hung the bawaajige nagwaagan. The God's Eye. The Dreamcatcher. Looking replete and satisfied. Waiting patient like a spider on its web for the landlord or the police. It didn't matter. Its next victim was just a few days away at best.

This was a Monday. Fitting.

My brain is in, of course, a weird mish-mashy place. With that said, life's been pretty smiley-face the past few weeks so no complaints. It's just the weather. This very English blend of mist, fog and drizzle is like kryptonite to my usual sunny demeanor.

I need money. Not in a 'I'm broke and my babies need to eat' kind of way. More like 'I'm ready to accept my destiny of being a jetsetter with homes in SF, NYC and Paris. And unfortunately they don't give out free homes to handsome, charming, talented black folks anymore' way.

Let's see what else... I'm at work and I feel like I only have another ten minutes to finish this latest installment, which of course means everyone and their baby-mama chooese now to say 'hi' so let me try to type fast.

Went with my mother to a retrospective of gay erotic art in the past centurty or so which is so ill. How many gay dudes can say that tehy can go with their moms to something like that and have a good time. I love that lady like fat guys love people who don't draw attention to their flabby man-breasts. I could not have asked for a better mother (maybe a richer one but definitely not a better one.)

I am geeked to go to SF!!! I can not wait to get to the left coast to bring in my big 27. *Now the trick is to start setting myself up to fit into that role. I want to be on the road of who I a at thet point. Does that make sense?

My sex life has been all but put on pause the last week or so. Unfortunately Brandon has a bit of a booty boo-boo and I'm not nearly as good of a bottom as I used to be. With that said, my short term goals include stepping it up, relaxing my mangina and getting some sexin' going on. That was probably way too personal but luckily no reads this. Tee hee ;)

I've been missing Cameron of late. Or more accurately, I don't want this disagreement between us to get to the point where it becomes a thing and all signs point to that natural progression if I don't step in with some of the lessons life continues to show me. This means not being stubborn which sucks because I love being stubborn.

Also, I miss Molly but it's hard to call her. The time difference becomes a problem often times because I'd really rather call her in the morning when I have the energy (usually because I'm a grouchy hermit, a lazy stoner or a drunken mess by the time where it would be appropriate to give her a ring.)

Okay I think that's it. I mean there's a ton of other things but they can wait til next time.

Okay it's been a month so I figured I should write something new ;P

Uhm... nothing much to report... wait, now I feel it... here it comes in no particular order:

The Black List is a amazingly powerful collection of narratives from a plethora of successful black people in a variety of fields. It's insanely inspiring and makes me want to be a better person (who happens to be black.)

I'm loving the Twilight series. I'm a white, suburban teenage girl and my pink little pussy cannot get enough of this series. What can I say, vampires and werewolves rock!

Feeling like I'm starting to reconnect with a couple of friends who've been missing from my life as of late. It's a good thing.

Aside from my complete adoration for all things hip-hop which will never subside, I've been on this new kick for lo-fi electro dirty soul. It's kind of the next generation of R&B but from a bunch of weirdos with midget budgets and bad brains. See: J*Davey, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Sy Smith, Bilal Salaam, Foreign Exchange, Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Tiombe Lockhart, Muhsinah, Yahzarah and PPP to name a few. It's what I want out of my soul music these days; basically an uninhibited predisposition that leans toward the extraterrestrial and artistic. Basically a bunch of black weirdos with away too many colors on their mind.

Valentine's was great and fun and awesome. I slow danced with Brandon. And drank punch. And made out with four strangers. Don't worry, Brandon was there. I think they call it "Spin the Bottle".

I miss Molly much and I can't wait til I can get back to CA. I'm kind of jonesin' to go.

I need someone to promise to punch me in the brain for every day I don't keep my word in regards to my self-imposed deadlines. Any takers?

I've had a decent amount of sex recently and it's funny because the more sex I have the more sex I want. Having sex makes me hornier than when I go without it (which hasn't happened in a while but I have a pretty good memory.) *Fortunately Brandon needs near-daily injections in his sex section so it all works out quite well ;)

I'm, of course, five years old and have added about 30 some odd cartoons to my Netflix queue recently. I'm talking everything from Adult Swim goodies to Disney classics to Ben 10 & Avatar episodes. It's really kind of crazy but I like it. Plus cartoons are some of the most digestible forms of visual entertainment when your diet consists of as much greens as mine does. See also: 30 Rock, Seinfeld, The Office, most good action movies and anything remotely connected to Judd Apatow.

I think that's it. With any luck my next post will have some art in it but don't count on it.

Okay, so let's see.

First of all, Seinfeld season 9 (which was truly the show's peak season in my opinion) has saved me from a shitty mood on at least three occassions since I bought it a couple of weeks ago. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a pick-me-up.

Secondly, still getting accustomed to living with Brandon. It's not terrible by any means, I'm just not used to having so little alone time at home. It's definitely a major change and I'm not adjusting as quickly as I imagined I would. It's the little things I find myself missing mostly. Stuff like waking up at 5am and making art. Or going to sleep when I feel like it (typically on the earlier side - think 10ish) and not feeling guilty because we didn't spend enough time together that night. Or putting things where I want to because it makes sense to me that they should go there. Or not smoking copious amounts of foliage on a nightly basis (I'm not blaming him at all but living with a head-pot makes it harder to resist the wacky tobbacky than you'd think.)

Don't get me wrong. All in all, I'm liking "married life" a lot, it's just taking more getting used to than I originally anticipated is all.

That and I never realized how antisocial I am when I'm at home until I couldn't be anymore. It's staggering to think that a person as sociable and friendly as I am could need so much "me time" in the homestead. I've known for years that my time at home was for recharging my social batteries. I just never realized how crucial it is to my well-being to do so. And Brandon gets it. But from his perspective it feels like after an entire day away from him I'm not ecstatic to see him. Where as my point of view is more like after an entire day of dealing with literally hundreds of people in one capacity or other (ah, the joys of retail) I'm so burnt out that I need a second (read: an hour) before I feel like being my normal self again.

Anyways that's been the prevailing theme of today's thoughtbleed. Trying to find a balance in my newly domesticated life.

In the plus column, I started a really awesome new collage last night/this morning. I've been trying to find images that really capture the feel of our home and both of our personalities and I think I've done it. Hopefully I'll be able to post a pic soon. *Still in the process of getting my scanner up and running.

In conclusion, Seinfeld is soma, married life is challenging, individuality is necessary and making art is always muy, muy bien.

Thou shall not tear the wings off things

Note: these are not resolutions. These are short-term goals I plan on accomplishing by the 1st of April.

Right. So it's a new year, a new me and all that that implies. There are things I want to do for a general life-improvement and why not start ASAP.

With that said, here are my 3-month goals:
-Creating an artist collective/support group with at least two other friends
-Create a blog to post artwork on with said artist collective
-Take a more active hand in decorating my home
-Write a blog at least once a week
-Purchase a digital camera
-Create some pictures with the ultimate goal of framing and presenting in the homestead
-Start + Finish the Munny Molly gave me and send it to her

I think that's it for now. Desperate attempts at being better.

A couple of days before Christmas and all I can think of is the cliff's edge of '08 is fast approaching.

About to jump into a brand new, same-old same-old and trying my best to catwalk to a different drummer. Writing helps (hint hint.) So does spilling crazy over every blank I can think of.

Still finding my water wings in New Yiddy city's kiddie pool. Fortunately the head has been above water for quite some time now. Thank Yahweh for small miracles.

My advice to the not-so-distant future K~Digz:
-Write something daily
-Draw-paint-collage something frequently
-Get more SLEEP!!!
-Keep exercising
-More vegetables and less sweets
-Don't forget to show Brandon how much you love him
-Never ever forget to make time for you friends
-And, for the love of God, use less cliches
